HOLY SHIT FORGOT THE JUMP.

I think that this is the breaking point for Trump. Conservatives are hating the Syria withdrawal. The government shutdown, which will be the longest in history, is showing some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! exactly how big, good and important “big bad government” actually is, and 2019 is shaping up to be a break or make moment for 45.

He ran out of chances. If Trump doesn’t get the funding for the wall, he will face serious internal and external challenges to his re-election in 22 months.

On the other side of the border we just don’t know where we stand. This fuel shortage is hitting 10 states, the two largest cities, and many industrial powerhouses in Mexico. Some governors are warning of possible instances of violence and many counties don’t even have enough fuel for their patrol cars.

This is Obrador’s first big blunder and we don’t know how his popularity will be hit yet. The death of Puebla’s governor is also going to point to a very vicious couple of years of Mexican politics as state elections run past right till the 2021 midterms. Elections will be held yet again in Puebla in a few months and they’re gonna run the same guy that ran against the deceased governor.

Obrador’s self made fuel crisis might reflect badly on six key state elections coming up. Anyone would’ve guessed he’s more than ready to face the music given double-digit wins in 2018, but we just don’t know what will happen. As he comes in as a great reformer, having a stronghold on state assemblies is necessary to pass the constitutional amendments he wishes to impose, and this electoral season, even if local, might show us how hard the path will be for our President.

I’ve seen a large number of Republicans blaming all of this on D emocrats, saying how much we need the wall, etc. And bring up Coast Gaurd not getting paid, which historically would be the kind of thing to rile up conservatives? “ Well, they’ll get their money eventually. Trump has to be strong and fight for what’s right”

I read some articles saying most people are blaming it on Trump...

Shutdowns have always been used to pressure the president (because nothing is as stupid as two-way procedural rules that give some people authority they shouldn’t have) and I don’t think they’re gonna be able to sell that it was the fault of the minority, opposition party.

Yes, but a government shutdown for another year would be absolutely devastating. 2020 prospects are irrelevant right now.

I don’t see any obvious  way out. I think he’s going to try to bring the country down with him. He simply doesn’t care.

Nah. Most of the federal workers that directly interact with the public on a day to day basis are still showing uo to work (despite not being paid). If people actually stayed home, you might see that.

The only politicians crazy enough to do that are in the South, and they know the asskicking they received the last time they tried that shit.

And most hillbillies in the South aren’t exactly in fighting shape, especially after the holiday season.

We get E. coli outbreaks even with food inspections ( people still eat shit faux Mexican food at Chipotle) , and a good proportion of Americans think vaccines are some sort of conspiracy to give kids autism, so I don’t think that’ll do it.

It’s endlessly entertaining living in California. Watching people complain about the homeless problem while simultaneously wasting half their paycheck on organic prepackaged tacos and kombucha. Meanwhile, my parents are balls deep in dragging out the shutdown “ because the democrats”.

I honestly don’t see this hurting him at all.  He already failed to repeal/replace Obamacare, and nobody seems to have noticed. Besides, his base is wholeheartedly convinced the Democrats are to blame, hence this meme that’s been floating around:

But he has been tremendously successful on the only two issues that people really care about: taxes and abortion . He lowered peoples’ taxes, a nd he nominated two conservative (pro-life) justices who exercise judicial restraint, meaning there’s no risk of them reopening/changing Roe v. Wade (which Kavanaugh has repeatedly upheld on at least 3 occasions in his career ). That mollifies his base, while appeasing pro-choice voters.  

As an added bonus, he started the war on political correctness. Of the many Republicans I know, few of them support Trump, but ALL of them love the fight against PC culture. Not just Republicans, but many Democrats I know as well begrudgingly admit that this is a welcome political development.  

But back to the wall, Trump  can just declare a state of emergency and redirect disaster funds for the wall . It would set a dangerous precedent (similar to Democrats eliminating the filibuster in 2013, and Republicans eliminating the SCOTUS filibuster 2017), but Trump doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to care about dangerous precedent.

SFA didn’t cover -or cost- as much, it didn’t blatantly disregard animal crossings, and it was a metal fence... not a thirty foot wall. The SFA and the border wall are as different as the ACA and a Medicaid for all plan.

People in the middle need to understand that it is a very different thing or else they might think Democrats are hypocrites which is not true. Yes, they might’ve soften their stance compared to thirteen years ago, but parties evolve... which is why Republicans don’t support cap and trade when they did back in the 90s. 

I don’t think the SFA was good legislation, but it made a few people very happy without costing or damaging as many people. I bet the SFA was signed as a sort of smoke curtain of bipartisanship.

H e did get the conservative judges, but the tax cuts have been an absolute failure, and the US economy is having such a sharp downturn the Mexican Peso is actually looking appealing!

I don’t think his fans will leave him ...But I do think that the more moderates that voted for him are getting tired of all the crazy shit.
